What is laser resurfacing?

Laser resurfacing treatments are ablative treatments and can be either full surface or fractional.

Full skin resurfacing (laser peels)

Ablative resurfacing lasers work by targeting water molecules in the skin. The laser beam gently vaporises very thin layers of the skin in a precise and controlled fashion. This effect can also transmit heat to the deeper skin layers to stimulate the production of new collagen in the dermis.

So-called laser peels can remove nearly all fine wrinkles while significantly improving deeper, more dynamic wrinkles. Laser peels can remove age spots and various age-related skin lesions, as well as improving the tone of your skin, giving you a natural, rejuvenated look.

Full resurfacing treatments are a more aggressive procedure, resulting in redness and potentially oozing, crusting and blistering for a few days to a few weeks (depending on the energy settings, intentions of treatment and the expectation of results). As the skin heals, it remains red for a further few days to weeks. The overall result is that your skin will look smoother and younger as well as feeling tighter and more supple as well.

Fractional skin resurfacing

For shorter downtimes a fractional skin resurfacing treatment is usually preferred to full ablation. A fractional skin resurfacing laser treatment precisely targets thousands of microscopic areas in the skin by splitting the laser beam into a multitude of smaller pinpoint laser beams. The treatment stimulates your body’s healing ability to replace the damaged skin with new healthy skin.  Because the skin surrounding the treated areas is not affected by the laser, healing is much faster and with less downtime than a full resurfacing treatment.

Fractional resurfacing will help improve your skin texture, address fine lines and wrinkles, treat acne scars and other scars, and even stretch marks, Fractional resurfacing will help restore your skin to a healthy more even tone and texture. The new skin will feel smoother with the advantage of reducing pore size and scarring caused by acne.

The SP Dynamis is capable of both full and fractional skin resurfacing treatments, while the Starwalker excels at fractional skin resurfacing (especially in darker skin types).

We will discuss your suitability for either treatment at your consultation.
